Books & ordering — English
English information
Two photography books drawn from rescued negatives, bringing together private lives and the history of the twentieth century.
Negativy z popelnice brings overlooked photographs back into view. Martin Wágner collects the negatives, and he and Světlana Wágnerová digitise them. Martin Wágner and Josef Moucha select the photographs for the books, arranging them into visual narratives that connect individual moments with the history around them.

Negativy z popelnice 1900–1945
Life under the monarchy, on the battlefields and during the First Czechoslovak Republic. Rescued photographs offer a glimpse into ordinary lives and turning points in history, up to the end of the Second World War.
Martin Wágner and Josef Moucha selected 211 photographs from the collection of rescued negatives. The reproductions generally preserve the whole negative, including its edges and traces of damage. Captions are provided in a separate booklet, and the book also includes access to an online archive with further photographs.

Volume II · Pre-order
Negativy z popelnice 1945–1968
Post-war hopes, the rebuilding of the country and life under the communist regime. Personal moments intersect with history, from the end of the war through the difficult 1950s to the Soviet occupation in August 1968.
The book draws on rescued negatives from the Wágner family collection and photographs shared by other owners. Alongside largely anonymous images, it includes work by known photographers. It closes with Jiří Heller’s reportage of the occupation of Prague in August 1968. The photographs were selected by Martin Wágner and Josef Moucha.

The photographs are printed on Garda paper using three specially mixed black inks, a triplex printing process finished with varnish. This brings out subtle tonal differences and deep blacks. Each volume has its own visual character, with careful attention to the reproduction of the photographs.
